I’m working on several essays right now about things I’ve noticed in our society and culture over the years and the “side hustle,” is one I’m looking into.
I just think the idea has gone off the rails, though I do think there’s some underlying good about having a side hustle as opposed to having a second job.
To me there is a clear difference between a side hustle and a second job. The side hustle is supposed to be something you want to do for work, but might not pay enough at first for you live on. Think the actor who is a waiter, the writer who stocks shelves at a grocery… A side hustle can also be something someone does to pay for something specific, like taking a part-time job to pay for a kid’s college education.
A second job, however, is just that. It’s a job you go to after your primary job because usually that primary job doesn’t pay enough to cover your costs of living. I’ve known lots of people who have second jobs.
Anyway, I’m working on the issue because I think it says a lot about our society, both the good and the bad.
I’ll be back with more.
Keep on writing, keep on running my friends.
