There are lots of times I just like to stop and listen. Sometimes it’s the “silence” of my house in the early mornings, when the only sound you hear is the humming of the heater and the occasional movements of my dog changing positions as he sleeps on the landing of the stairs.
But as I think about it, there are other sounds that fill up your life and provide the rythm of your life and really tell something about the life you’re living at the time.
There was the chunking and thunking sound of the hopper when I was a baker and the banging and rolling of dough by the chorus of bakers working to shape rounds of sourdough bread. There was the scraping sound of shovel on dirt and rocks that was the rythm of being a day laborer in concrete. The sound of voices in discussion bookended with the quite of kids taking tests that was teaching. The sounds of balls striking leather and laughter and talk as kids warmed up that was the time I coached baseball. There was the sound of the wheels on the road that was my time as a TV ratings tech and, of course, the clicking and clacking of the keyboard and the people on phones that was a newsroom.
The sounds of the keyboard, that’s my favorite of all of them. It springs from the fingertips, the letters chasing each other across the page to bring to life my ideas and thoughts for hopefully others to read. It’s both physical and mental and social in that I hope to share this with others.
Keep on running, keep on writing.
When I was at work using a keyboard many years ago, the most unusual and enjoyable tap of my keys brought up the vision of the way a little league short stop “danced” as he readied himself for the batter’s hit.

That’s fun imagery and clever. I really like that. I’ve heard some really good imagery from other people lately. This one came up today, “It’s like tiny elvers are beating hammers into my head and my stomach is tossing like an overloaded washing machine.”
