Hey, our favorite Boston Marathon champ, Des Linden, is going to try to break the 50k world record tomorrow morning in Oregon.
Linden is the gutty runner from Chula Vista, Calif, who, in 2018, ran through miserable conditions, including heavy rain to win the 122nd Boston Marathon. She represented the U.S. twice in the Olympic Marathon and tomorrow morning in Oregon she’s chasing the 50k record beginning at 8:15 a.m.
The women’s 50K record is 3:07:20 and held by Great Britain’s Aly Dixon. Women’s Running has a good article about it and they calculated Linden will have to average better than 6:02 per mile to best Dixon’s time. Linden has run marathons at much faster paces, but a 50 K is a little over 31 miles, or nearly five miles longer than a marathon.
Linden has a pretty low key image overall, but she’s made a lot of noise about attempting the record and I think it’s great. One should live out loud. The attempt is not being broadcast live, but we should know by the afternoon if she’s done it or not.
Locally, we’ve got big news here in the Biggest Little City, Reno, Nevada.
Reno Races, fresh off of managing the Reno Connector Run this weekend, is taking sign ups for the annual Bowers Mansion Fire Cracker Run on June 20. The Bowers Run is in Washoe Valley at Bowers Mansion, a historic home to one of the Comstock’s most celebrated and successful women, Eilley Bowers and her husband Sandy. It’s a beautiful place to run and you get your choice of half marathon, 10k or 5k. To keep it clean in the covid era, Reno Races will be starting the races in waves.
And that’s not all folks. You can also help out High Sierra Animal Rescue, which gave my family Midnight.

They’ve got a virtual 22 mile challenge going between June 5 and June 27. You can sign up here.
